About Cornerstone

Cornerstone exists to be an example of the Church that Jesus described, and Christians modeled in the early Christian movement. We believe in the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that transforms every part of who we are, so that we represent God and His kingdom to the world. We are a multisite ministry whose mission is Helping People Know Jesus And Make Him Known.

Our Beliefs

The Bible

We believe the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments are the inspired and holy Word of God – God-breathed. It is our source of knowledge about God and truth for Christian beliefs and living. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

The Trinity

We believe God is one living and true God, but who mysteriously exists in perfect community as three equal and fully divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each form of God, while having different but complementary roles, has the same nature, characteristics and being, and is worthy of equal praise and obedience. (Matthew 28:19-20; John 1:1-4; Genesis 1:1-2)

God the Father

We believe God the Father is the creator of the universe. He has unimaginable intelligence, infinite knowledge and is all-powerful. God has authority and control over all creation, and yet desires to love us very personally as His children. (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3; John 1:12-13)

God the Son

We believe Jesus Christ is uniquely God’s Son — fully God and yet fully human - sent by God to be born of a virgin; Mary. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven and will return again to make all creation new (John 14:6; Philippians 2:5-11; Matthew 28:5-6; Luke 21:27; Revelation 21:5)

God the Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is God’s presence with us on earth today - our primary teacher, comforter and source of God’s power. The Holy Spirit came in a new and mighty way upon Christians at Pentecost and is the source of power for living and spiritual guidance for Christians. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin and leads people to respond in faith to the Gospel message. (Acts 2; John 16:7-11; Romans 8)

Salvation

We believe, that because of the rebellion against God and “The Fall” of humanity in Genesis, all people sin and therefore deserve separation from God. On our own, we can never overcome sin. Jesus’ death on the cross was a sacrifice on our behalf and his resurrection makes possible our forgiveness and reconciliation with God. This isn’t because of anything we might do for God, but out of His grace and love for us. Repentance from our sins and belief in Jesus Christ are the only requirements for us to receive the gift of eternal life. (Romans 10:9-13; Romans 5:1)

Holiness

As the result of our commitment to God through Jesus, we grow in faith. Our love for God and for one another becomes more complete, although we can never become sinless. As we grow in our Christian faith, our desire to please God and live like Jesus also grows. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Heaven and Hell

We believe Heaven and Hell are real places in a different dimension in God’s creation. It is God’s desire for all humanity to spend eternity with Him and He is in relentless pursuit for every soul. We will be judged for our eternal destiny, but rejection is not by God but by those who reject God’s pursuit. We believe Christ will return to establish a new heaven and new earth as the eternal dwelling place for God’s family. (John 14:1-4, Revelation 20, 21)

The Church

We believe the Church is not a building. It is the body of Christ, with Jesus Christ as the head. Our purpose is to glorify God, make disciples in his name, and make him known by loving others as Christ loves us. It is the responsibility of the Church to usher in the Kingdom of God into the brokenness of our world. (Matthew 16:18; Matthew 28:18-20, John 13:34)

Communion

We believe communion is a remembrance of the suffering and death of Christ and a celebration of His resurrection. We celebrate an “open table” — meaning that all who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and anyone wanting to seek that are welcome to participate in this sacrament in their journey to know Christ. (Luke 22:14-21)

Baptism

In baptism, we publicly acknowledge and celebrate the grace of God, freely offered to us before we were even aware. Baptism is our response to this grace and sign of God’s covenant with us. We believe baptism may occur at any age. As children, parents pledge, with the congregation, to nurture the children with Christian care and teaching until they are old enough to confirm their faith for themselves. Adults make this public declaration for themselves. In baptism, we confess our sin, accept membership in the family of Christ, and vow to trust in and serve Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38-39, Acts 16:15,33)

Human Sexuality

As a multisite church reflecting diverse communities, we welcome all people into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Regarding human sexuality and identity, we know that Cornerstone participants and members are not of one mind. However, we believe Christian unity binds us together regardless of our differences.

Specific to questions regarding the LGBTQ+ community and individuals, while we do not perform same sex marriage ceremonies, we do invite all people, including LGBTQ+ persons, into full participation within our church. At Cornerstone, participation includes attendance, serving, receiving the sacraments, and membership. We also invite LGBTQ+ individuals and their families to not only participate but to step into the discipleship journey and receive spiritual care that every sacred person deserves.

We believe it is our calling as a church to invite a diverse community of believers, who may not share every thought, to share in the care and burdens of one another. We pray that our unity be an expression of the grace and love we have received from Jesus Christ and that the same grace and love powers our connection within the body of our church, our community and our world. (Ephesians 4:1-6)

Women in Leadership

Cornerstone Church fully affirms women in ministry leadership at all levels of church life, including teaching, preaching, and pastoral ministry. This value is rooted in what we believe to be the most faithful interpretation of Scripture, specifically in the equal gifting of the Holy Spirit in all people, the witness we see in both the Old and New Testaments of women called to lead in the work of God, and the example of Jesus throughout his ministry. As a church that desires to reflect the Kingdom of God, we believe that supporting the equal gifting and calling of women as well as men is a crucial part of participating in the restoration of what God originally intended for humanity. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Ephesians 4:11-13, Galatians 3:28)
