Because a Hungry Child Hurts

Hand2Hand of Cornerstone delivers hope to hungry children by providing backpacks filled with nutritious food for the weekends!

Hand2Hand Ministries at Cornerstone

1 in 5 children in West Michigan doesn’t have enough food, especially over the weekends. That’s why there’s Hand2Hand of Cornerstone — a ministry that gets food to school kids who need it! During the 2016-17 school year, our South Wyoming campus partnered with Vanguard Charter Academy and helped dozens of children through Hand2Hand. For the 2017-18 school year, we’re excited to meet even more needs!

Each Cornerstone campus now partners with a local school:

84th St. Campus: Bowen Elementary

Bowen Elementary School is part of Kentwood Public Schools. It’s located on Kalamazoo Avenue, just south of 44th Street. It’s an excellent school with an ethnically and socio-economically diverse student body of about 350 kids. A majority of the children qualify for free/reduced lunch. Each week during the school year, Cornerstone Church, in collaboration with Streams of Hope Food Center, provides backpacks of food for kids over the weekend.

How To Lend a Hand

Backpack packing for Bowen is being handled by Cornerstone Student Ministries! But trust us; there are other ways you can help. We’re looking for people to shop for specific food items, monitor and organize inventory, coordinate menus, make lists of food items that are getting low, unpack donations and stock shelves, help with backpack deliveries, transporting food that is collected at 84th Street and taking it to Streams of Hope and more! (Streams of Hope is where food is stored and packing is done.)

Heritage Hill Campus: Campus Elementary

Campus Elementary School is part of Grand Rapids Public Schools. It’s located on Benjamin Avenue in South East Grand Rapids. We’ve had a relationship with this school since 2013, but this year, we’re bringing Hand2Hand of Cornerstone to Campus for the first time! Campus Elementary has approximately 450 students, with a large portion receiving free and reduced breakfast and lunch. During the school year, we’re providing backpacks of food for kids over the weekends. Food is stored and packed right at Campus Elementary School!

How To Lend a Hand

There are lots of ways to help! One of the biggest we have right now is to help pack the backpacks for Campus Elementary, and putting the backpacks in kids' lockers! Just click the blue "I Can Help Pack!" button below for details, and to get on the packing schedule!

South Wyoming Campus: Vanguard Charter Academy

Vanguard Charter Academy is a free charter school located on 52nd Street SW in Wyoming, for kids in grades Kindergarten – 8th Grade. We started Hand2Hand of Cornerstone here inJanuary 2017, serving 39 students. Vanguard is a suburban school with just less than half of the students qualifying for free and reduced breakfast/lunch. Each week during the school year, Hand2Hand of Cornerstone provides backpacks of food for kids over the weekends.

How To Lend a Hand

We’re looking for people to help at backpack packing nights twice a month, help keep the pantry at South Wyoming organized, someone to help with shopping for certain food items, deliver backpacks to the Vanguard each week, and more!

Other Ways to Help

  • Donate Food!

Each week at all of our Cornerstone campuses, we collect food for the backpacks in the Hand2Hand of Cornerstone Shopping Carts! Click here for a list of items we're collecting or grab a list from shopping cart at your campus. (Just a Reminder: donated food should not expire for a minimum of three months from the date it’s donated.)

  • Donate Grocery Bags!

We're collecting clean, dry, plastic grocery bags. We use them to pack food into the backpacks. Plus, sometimes kids forget to bring their backpacks, so we leave the food in plastic bags their lockers. Just put the bags in the Hand2Hand boxes at each campus.

  • Organize your own Hand2Hand H.O.P.E. on the Move Food Drive!

Coordinate a collection drive in your neighborhood, school or business and have the HOPE on the Move Trailer where you're collecting! You can choose to help Hand2Hand of Cornerstone meet needs at Campus, Bowen or Vanguard, or collect items for the H.O.P.E. Gathering Events!

How? Sign up for the HOPE on the Move Trailer to be delivered to your Hand2Hand of Cornerstone Food Drive! A Hand2Hand volunteer will follow up with you and ask where you'd like the trailer delivered and picked up.

  • H.O.P.E. Gatherings (Hands of People Everywhere)

H.O.P.E. Gatherings are focused on putting together snack packs that are added to weekly Hand2Hand backpacks. West Michigan H2H partners, including Cornerstone, take turns hosting H.O.P.E. Gatherings through the year, and the public is invited to help! The goal is to pack about 2000 snack packs that are shared between Hand2Hand partners in West Michigan, including H2H of Cornerstone. H.O.P.E. Gatherings at Cornerstone are 6:30-7:30pm in Base Camp at 84th St. on these Thursdays:

    November 16, 2017
    January 18, 2018
    March 15, 2018

We’re limited to the first 50 people who register below:
